Georg Luger developed the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, at the German company Deutschen Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). Luger had originally developed the Luger pistol in a necked 7.65mm caliber. Upon request from the German Army for a more potent version of the Luger pistol, he simply removed the bottleneck of the 7.65 mm Luger cartridge and by doing this created a new 9 mm straight walled rimless cartridge now known as the 9mm Luger. It remains the standard pistol caliber for NATO and for the military in most other countries in the world.
